Reality Show Update!
Yesterday, one of my favorite bloggers, Alissa Wilson of Stylish Curves, tagged me in a post on Twitter. Of course I had to check out what my curvy friend was saying because it's not every day that I receive Twitter love. To my surprise, she had spotted the new teaser for the reality show I taped this past summer.

Which Way Do I Turn?
Anna D. wears SK WiLBUR available at skwilbur.com
Everybody is feeling the funk as a result of this challenging economy, including yours truly! My business partners, Ashanti and Serosh, and I thought that if we built it, the curvy women would come, with credit cards in hand, in droves. I mean, that is what they told us after the JET magazine article ran. But it has only been a mediocre response, at best, with only a sprinkling of full-figured women expressing interest.
Each season I do my best to really capture the trends while creating looks that will compliment a fuller woman's body. I visit high end stores to research what is being sold, not just in plus size departments, but in contemporary and designer departments, too. But for my Spring 2012 collection Out of the Dark, I made an extra effort to use design elements that would appeal to a curvy woman's aesthetic while camouflaging the "problem" areas. The buyers at the major department stores told me that marketing to the curvy customer is challenging. They weren't kidding! Now, as an e-tailer, I am seeing it firsthand for myself.
But something's got to give. Moving forward, my team and I are looking for ways to refine our image and carve out a niche for ourselves in the marketplace. I don't think the idea is to slash prices as much as it is to continue to offer BOLD, MODERN, and CLASSIC fashion with value. Stay tuned as we begin to implement subtle changes. And if you know of any curvy woman in need of a fabulous dress, please direct her to www.skwilbur.com.

Whirlwind
I have been so busy, I can barely keep up with myself. Last week, I shot a new reality show that will be airing soon on Lifetime. Afterwards, I hit the ground running as I coordinated three fittings in as many days. On Sunday, as the rain was pouring down monsoon-style, I was making my way to Jersey City, NJ to have one of my tailors, Mr. B, work his magic on two of my models. What is normally a one hour and twenty-five minute trip from my home in Queens took me nearly four hours. I was begging for Noah and his ark! That trek wasn't much fun. But in the name of fashion, I will cross rivers and climb mountains. Now that is dedication!
I am still receiving notes from women all over the country who have seen the JET article who want to thank me, encourage me, and praise me. I grin each time I read one of those comments. My strength is renewed and I feel energized to work harder as I make moves to get my aesthetic out there for curvy women to purchase. I choose to focus on that instead of worrying about where the money to finish paying for all my samples for the collection is going to come from. I am connected to the universe which is providing for me. Besides, all evidence points to this moment that I've been working towards for the last 13 years.
In the meantime, Ashanti and I have been contacting media to see if they will attend my runway show on September 13. I am going to continue to do everything in my power to extend my whirlwind moment. In the eye of this storm is where I feel I belong and I am lovin' it!

Shine On!
After taking a little Independence holiday break from blogging, I am back. I feel something, some kind of excitement, percolating under my exterior. There is nothing tangible happening. . . yet. I am still waiting to hear from the two television reality shows that had expressed initial interest. Being on either one of those shows would certainly provide me with great exposure. In the meanwhile, I am working my butt off as my September 13 runway show date draws nearer. I have started contacting models. My seamstress, Angela, and I have begun fittings. And I am in the throes of sewing more samples on my mother's old Singer for my soon-to-be-revealed handbag line. I still wonder about my finances, or the lack thereof, and how I am going to pay for everything. But my focus has shifted and I feel positive that things are going to work out in my favor. Ashanti & I have also begun contacting a couple of brands about in-kind sponsorship for our runway show. In other words, it is business as usual. Only it's not, because this time I'm not going to let anything or anyone dull my shine. So I suggest you put on your sunglasses.

Papa's Got A Brand New Bag
Strong Enough For A Man, But Made For A Woman
I never really know where the wind is going to take me. My business partners and I have revised our business plan on a number of occasions to reflect each new course we've taken. As a small business owner, flexibility is essential. My belief is when you're on a path that is not getting the results you want, it's time to change direction. I've designed every kind of women's fashion you can imagine because I am looking for that place in the industry where I am most fulfilled both creatively and monetarily.
Last year when I launched my collection for plus size women, I decided to create my own handbags to accessorize my dresses. I had no intention of ever selling the bags. I was just trying to create a head-to-toe look that told the story of my imaginary muse who had traveled the world. But I got such an overwhelming response from women asking about the bags that I've decided to pursue getting them into retail outlets. They will, in all likelihood, sell for less than the dresses retailing at $95 to $250. The styles have fun names like "Shop 'Til You Drop It Like It's Hot" and "Strong Enough For A Man, But Made For A Woman". And I think they will appeal to women from age 18 to 80. It's been gratifying sewing these bags myself. I just hope that retailers far and wide will be taken with my fun, tongue-in-chic aesthetic.

It's Hot & I'm Tired. Period.
SK WiLBUR handbags from Fall 2010
I am not gonna complain about the last couple of days where the temperature has risen above 90 degrees. I'm one of those people who HATES winter. Yeah, I said it. Although I am a native New Yorker, the cold weather and long stretches of darkness put a damper on my spirit. Not to mention the backaches I endure from shoveling snow. So, for me, summer is the lesser of two evils.
You may ask yourself, "What has any of this got to do with blackfashiondude's odyssey?" Absolutely nothing. But I'd just like to mention that I've been suffering in my not-so-cool basement slaving over my mother's old Singer while sewing up handbags for my forthcoming collection. But this is my cross to bear. I am not trying to do the "Woe is me" thing right now. I am simply making a statement. It's hot. My bags are looking fabulous. It's time for me to sign off. Well, that's actually 3 statements. But we're not going to argue over semantics. I'm escaping to air conditioned bliss one floor up.

I'm Working On It

Ashanti wears SK WiLBUR @ FFF Week 2010
Next week is Full-Figured Fashion Week. Jam packed with seminars, panel discussions, and fashion initiatives designed to empower the curvy community, the festivities begin on Thursday and end on Saturday. This will be the second year attending with my sister, Ashanti, who is also my company's Communications Director. We have tickets for opening night where we will be sailing around New York City on a sunset cruise for an all white party. Nice! I am not sure what I will be wearing, but I have created a special look for my sister that I am sure will knock the socks off the crowd of curvy fashionistas.
Full-Figured Fashion Week is a huge opportunity for me to network with women who have come from near and far who may not be familiar with my fabulous design aesthetic. After all, not all the action is happening on the catwalk. I am really looking forward to getting acquainted with many of the ladies who come with high spirits and wide smiles ready to be encouraged and validated. Although I will not be able to attend the finale runway event on Saturday evening, Ashanti will be there decked out in SK WiLBUR, of course, to represent. She has strict orders to mingle and network as much as possible. Once the ladies see her ensemble, I am sure they will have plenty of questions. We did a preliminary fitting last night and all I can say is that she will look FIERCE. I still cannot divulge any photos, but the day of reckoning is soon upon us. Just wait. . .

What's Next?
I am rejuvenated and focused - again. And I am ready to conquer the fashion world with my sophisticated line of fashion for the curvy woman. Every season I say that it is my best collection to date. So I am not going to say that this time. But what I will say is that I am convinced that I am on the right track.
I am reaching out to goddesses, both near and far, who will be descending on New York City for Full-Figured Fashion Week this June to see if they may be interested in a Wilbur original confection to wear. The event will be jam-packed with runway shows and seminars and discussions designed to empower the fuller woman. I'm just excited to be a part of the love fest. It's not about snubbing the slimmer woman, but it is about uplifting the voluptuous woman who has been marginalized for too long. My sister, Ashanti, and I will be front and center ready to make new friends and connect with new business contacts. And I'll be sharing all the great news right here. But that is almost two months away. Right now, I've got to get busy and make sure my ladies are well-turned out.

Big Girls Are Beautiful, Too!
Okay, so this Friday past I posted my personal views (How You Like Her Now?) about Jennifer Hudson's drastic weight loss. Many of you who follow the blog on Facebook weighed in with very insightful observations and strong opinions. Some of you agreed with me while others believe that secretly many women who are a size 14 or more would trade in their curves to live their lives as skinny J-Hud clones.

I cannot begin to fully comprehend all the pressures that women face on the daily to fit into our narrow ideas of beauty. Once upon a time, only fair-skinned women were considered beautiful. And then our tastes evolved and now we consider women of darker hues just as comely. And a long time ago, back in the 16th century, a vanguard Flemish artist created THE standard of feminine beauty when he painted portraits of women who were plump and attractive. His name was Peter Paul Rubens. And the term rubenesque was born.
I love women who are small, medium, or large. I love women of all ethnicities. And I love women who are confident and have a healthy sense of humor. But right now I am most concerned about full-figured women who aren't always validated as beautiful, sexy, and intelligent beings. So I've presented images of some of my favorite glamorous celebrities who really seem to embrace their curves. Without remorse.

Where's Wilbur?
Just the other day, I saw a post on my Facebook wall from my friend Jamie Rice. She asked me where I had been and informed me that she missed my blog entries. The truth is that I had been floating in the abyss of self-doubt and disappointment once again. I had tried so many times to write about my odyssey, but I was stuck and everything I wrote sounded as blue as I was feeling. I just didn't want to put that out there to whatever readers I may have left. And so I held my tongue.
Ashanti and I had run ourselves ragged trying to sell the Spring 2011 collection. Each evening after returning home from the plantation, we were feverishly making calls and sending emails to boutiques and specialty stores throughout the U.S. in our desperate attempt to get the line out to the public. Certainly these store owners would embrace us like the curvy women who had sent me countless messages asking how they might purchase a Wilbur design. Despite all the love we received from our potential customers and the clamor of interest we got from bloggers and fashion followers, all we got from retailers was loud silence. And then I began to worry about how I was going to put a collection together to show this March. Time was moving by. Quickly. We hadn't even begun work on the garments. I was and still am seriously in debt from our September debut and there was no money to beg, borrow, or steal. My mother could see the obvious anxiety in my actions and suggested I take a break. "What?! I can't take a break now. Everyone is expecting my follow-up collection." I tried to forge ahead. Then a business colleague, Brandon Atherley, who is a talented and respected celebrity fashion stylist, shared his thoughts. He advised, "Instead of trying to throw something together and it not being your best work, why don't you sit this season out?" When two or more people share similar recommendations, I really take notice because I believe that the universe is speaking to me through them. And so I decided that I would shelf plans to produce samples for a fall collection and press the refresh button on my soul. It was the best decision that I've made thus far this year. It has allowed me to re-evaluate some of the ways that I handle my business. I am still interested in attaining financial success, but I will not allow the possibility of making it rule me to the point of breaking my spirit. I am finally, after 13 years, beginning to understand that I have a gift and I am not going to let people in positions of power make me feel like my designs are less than awesome. I am going to treat myself with care and not let the validation of others define my self-worth. After all, I Am Fabulous. . . despite what you might think!

Paradise
I have opposing forces pulling at me. On one hand, I am all Zen and connected to the universe as I invoke the preacher's words from Sunday's church service with declarations like "I am a winner!" But on the other, I am worried that I will never quite measure up to the bigness of my dreams in the fashion world becoming just a small footnote that was never quite in vogue. I wrestle with these 2 frames of mind often. And so on the eve of what is to be my big launch, the angel and the devil are chillin' on my shoulders once again whispering in each of my ears as I try to press forward. I'd rather listen to the angel with her ceaseless message of my success, but sometimes that devil encroaches and I become a panic-stricken fool. My dresses are progressing nicely, though not at the pace that I would like them to. Things are falling into place. My creativity is through the roof. But I just cannot get too overjoyed, yet. Much still has to be done. And I don't know how it's all going to play out. But I just want to continue to trust my faith in myself and in my journey. After all, a kind of paradise is on the horizon. And it is filled with beautiful women wearing my dresses that they bought from the stores that I have always imagined carrying my line. They are the kind of stores that dispense pretty shopping bags stuffed with tissue paper and provide unparalleled service. Paradise is my destiny. The devil be damned.
